With a base made of stones, Mankiala Stupa commonly known as Tope Mankiala, is located around 35 kilometers from Islamabad in the village of Mankiala. It is related to Gandhara period and known for various mesmerizing stories. It is said that Tope Mankiala was made as a memorial of Buddha as he sacrificed some of his body parts at this place to feed hungry tiger cubs. According to the British Library, Mankiala Stupa was built during the period of Kanishka (128-151 AD) and first discovered by British traveler Mountstuart Elphinstone on his way towards Afghanistan in 1908. According to some researchers, Mankiala Stupa is one of those 84 stupas that were constructed by King Ashoka to honor Buddha, after he embraced Buddhism and declared it as the state religion.
