The Mausoleum of Shah Shams Tabrez also known as Shams Sabzwari Multani (died 757 A.H. / 1356 A.D) is located in Multan, on the high bank of the old bed of the Ravi River near Aam-Khas garden. It was built in the classic Multani style by his grandson, Sadr al-din, in 1330 A.D. The tomb is square, 30 feet (9.1 m) in height surmounted by a hemispherical dome; artistically decorated with ornamental glazed tiles. The style of his tomb is characterized by a square lower story, an octagonal drum, a square dome, battered walls, and corner minaret-like towers called Guldastas (Flower Bouquets). Shah Shams Tabrez arrived in Multan in early 1200 A.D. from the city of Iran "Sabzwar" and preached Islam to the native people. He was popular for his soulful poetry and was also a contemporary of Multan’s greatest saint, Bahauddin Zakariya. He was the spiritual instructor of Rumi & referenced with great regard in Rumi’s poetic collection, in particular “Diwan-i Shams-i Tabrezi” (The Works of Shams of Tabriz).
