Located in the archaeological city of Taxila, Punjab, the Bhir Mound is one of the oldest and most significant urban settlements of the Gandhara Civilization, dating back to around the 6th century BCE. Believed to have been founded by the Achaemenid Empire and later occupied by the Greeks, Mauryans, and Kushans, this ancient mound represents the earliest known city of Taxila. Excavations have revealed a complex urban layout that once thrived as a major center of trade, culture, and learning, linking Central Asia with the Indian subcontinent. Standing amidst the rolling hills of Taxila, Bhir Mound is a silent witness to the dawn of urban civilization in the region.

The ruins of Bhir Mound showcase remarkable archaeological and architectural evidence of early city planning. Its irregular street patterns, stone and mud-brick houses, and defensive city walls illustrate a transition from primitive settlements to organized urban centers. Excavations led by Sir John Marshall in the early 20th century uncovered coins, pottery, beads, seals, and tools that highlight the city’s vibrant commercial activity. Among the most notable discoveries are punch-marked coins and Persian-influenced artifacts, proving Taxila’s role as a multicultural hub where Greek, Persian, and Indian influences converged. The city walls of Bhir Mound, though now in ruins, still hint at the defensive strength and civic structure of a flourishing metropolis.

Today, the Bhir Mound site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Taxila complex, managed by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Pakistan. It continues to attract historians, archaeologists, and tourists fascinated by ancient Gandharan culture. Walking through the remains of Bhir Mound, one can almost envision the bustling markets, scholars’ quarters, and artisans’ workshops that once filled its streets.
