Shah Rukn-e-Alam is the grandson of well-known Saint of the Indian sub-continent Baha-ud-din Zakariya and is laid to rest in central Multan. His mausoleum was built in 1320-24 AD and also houses the graves of the Sufi saint Sheikh Rukn-ud-Din Abul Fateh (1251-1335) and dozens of his devotees and family members. It is the first octagonal tomb in the South Asia subcontinent. Shrine Shah Rukn-e-Alam is widely recognized as the first representative specimen of Tughluq architecture, characterized by thick, battered walls, the use of wood and stone as primarily building materials, a reduced emphasis on ornament, the borrowing of Hindu motifs and structural practices, and the incorporation of military design elements. This sophisticated shrine is an octagon in plan with a diameter of 15' 9’’ and a side measuring 20’6". The structure is built entirely in red brick. The colors used are Indian blue, Persian blue and white, which contrast well with the red bricks.
