The Lahore fort, also known as SHAHI QILA, is a testament of many centuries. Al-Beruni compiled the history of Lahur in which he stated the earliest reference of fort which states that Shahi Qila was constructed in the early 11th century. It is located in the north-western corner of the Walled City of Lahore. UNESCO has declared this historic storytelling fort a World Heritage Site. The area of Lahore fort measures about 427 meters east-west and 335 meters north-south. While the fortification wall added later during the Sikh rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1799 – 1839 A.D), built in small burnt bricks. The main gates of the fort are located in the middle of the east and the west walls. In the north-west corner, a gateway is located which provides access to the private apartment of the royalty. Lahore fort was built as a royal castle but it had served as a safe place for royal treasury and a stronghold in the event of war as well. Lahore fort has endured all the seasonal variations and upheavals of history for centuries with immense dignity and is a symbol of pride & protection for the people of Lahore.
